He just told everyone that last fall he started to carefully prune all the fruit trees we had out in our nursery. He learned this technique from his days as a master gardener in Massachusetts.

"That's why they're so big and bushy, and why they're producing fruit at such a young age," he said with a smile on his face.

Paul was right... these trees are huge! All the fruit trees in our nursery had more branches than usual, which means that they're able to produce more fruit than a normal fruit tree.

"I even give them a quick snip before we send them out... just to make sure that it's perfect. This is also because some of them are so big, they wouldn't fit in the box!"

Read the rest of the story on our fruit trees here...

Double Knockout Roses Just in Time for Valentine's Day

The Double Knockout Rose is an improved variety over the original Knock Out. For example, our 3-5 ft. Crape Myrtles are in huge 3 gallon containers to provide the roots enough room to grow. And all gardeners know the better the root system, the better the tree. We carry these developed trees so that when you plant, you have a higher success rate of enjoying your trees!

If, for some reason, your tree happens to fail, simply give us a call. We offer a full 90 day replacement guarantee. If your tree dies within 90 days, we replace it!

We ship our trees via Fed Ex. It's that simple.

When looking for trees for sale, price is another main concern. Perhaps some Red Maples to add some fall color, or maybe a Crape Myrtle or two for spring time flowers? It’s a great idea. Fall is the second best time to plant in the year, and those cold temperatures that are about to arrive will allow your trees to go dormant over the winter and thrive optimally in the spring. But as with any time of year, it’s vital to follow proper planting practices, to give your tree the very best start possible. Let’s talk about the ideal way to plant a new tree once you have it and are ready to dig!

Select an area with the proper sun requirements for the tree you have selected. It’s also important to select an area that is well drained and free of any grass or weeds, which can compete with your tree for nutrients. Once you have an area selected, dig a hole that is twice the size of the root ball (both in height and width) to make sure the roots have plenty of room to grow.

Place your tree in the planting hole, making sure it is level and not planted too deeply for good health. The root collar should be level with the ground, not below it. If necessary, backfill the hole a bit to make sure this is a possibility. Once you have your tree positioned, be sure to spread the roots out in the hole so they can break through the soil and grow deeply with ease.

To fill the hole back in, mix 50% native dirt with 50% quality gardening soil or peat moss. Once the hole is filled completely, pat the soil gently and water deeply. Mulch around the tree approximately 2-4 inches for insulation from the winter cold, making sure the mulch does not touch the trunk of the tree.

And you’re done! It’s that simple. Happy fall planting!

Privacy Screens for Fall Plantings

With all this talk about "going green" and saving on heating and cooling costs, it's no big surprise that so many homeowners are looking to plant a privacy screen that doubles as a wind barrier. Not to mention that privacy screens, when planted well with quality trees, can increase property value by 5-10%! The fall season is nearly upon us, and that means that one of the best times of year for planting has arrived! These next few months are especially ideal if you've been planning to put in a privacy screen, but weren't sure where to start.

We here at Fast Growing Trees Nursery highly recommend the Thuja Green Giant and Leyland Cypress Trees if you're looking for optimal wind protection thoughout the cold winter months. These are dense evergreen trees that will block the cold winds as well as provide plenty of privacy. In addition, they are very fast growing (between 3-5 feet per year!) and will provide benefits much quicker than other popular evergreen choices, such as holly.

If you are looking to plant a privacy screen but aren't quite as concerned with energy savings as you are with eye appeal, go ahead and select a bright flowering tree, like Crape Myrtles or flowering Pear trees. While these won't provide year round privacy as they are decidious, many homeowners feel that when planted in rows, these flowering trees provide all the privacy they need during the time of year they feel it matters most: spring and summer.

Fall Planting and it's Benefits

If you landscape and garden under the impression that spring is the one and only perfect time of year to do your planting, you are in for a surprise! The fall season is actually considered by agricultural extension agencies and horticulturalists to be the ideal time to do planting.

The reason behind this is that once your area gets a few frosts, plants go dormant and are no longer as active. By planting in this cool time of year, you'll get root growth that is well able to absorb lots of water duringhot summer temperatures. In addition, plants that are planted in the fall tend to suffer much less from transplant than spring planted items.

Fall is considered the best time of year to plant bare root trees and plants, as well as certain roses and perennials. It is also safe to plant containerized plants in the fall, although they are not quite as hardy as their bare root counterparts. Trees that are especially popular for fall plantings are shade trees such as Red Maples, the Royal Empress tree, and different varieties of poplar.

As at any time of year, take care in planting. Be sure to follow good planting pratices and give proper attention to watering.

Tips For Green Landscaping!

Due to all the press about global warming and the importance of "going green", most homeowners are now searching for ways to landscape their property in the manner that is most environmentally friendly.

Here are our top five tips for landscaping the "green" way: both to save money, and the planet!

1. Landscape With Energy In Mind

When selecting trees and plants for your landscape, be sure to select and plant your materials while taking into account how different trees and shrubs effect heating and cooling costs. For example, planting shade trees on the east and west sides of your home can lower your cooling costs by up to 30%! In the same manner, shrubs and hedges planted against the foundation of your home can lower heating expenses by as much as 15%.

2. Choose Native Plants and Trees

Plants that naturally grow in your area will require a lot less from you in terms of time and energy, as well as helping to clean up the air and put a stop to invasive species taking over and wasting the water supply that could be used on good, natural plants and trees. For example, if Crape Myrtle trees are native to your area, they will grow well in your landscape without much excess water or maintenance from you.

3. Don't Waste Rainwater!

By setting up a rain cistern, you can provide your landcape with free water all season long. You can purchase rain barrels for nearly nothing, and in doing so you will help the environment immensely by not wasting one of it's most precious resources!

4. Save All Materials

Don't just throw away flower pots and tree containers. These materials are completely free to you and can be used again and again.

5. Composting

Composting costs nothing and can take care of all of those leaves, vegetable matter and grass clippings you don't know what to do with. By following a basic composting plan you can let the microorganisms bacteria and worms make fertilizer for you!

Going Green with Stainless Steel Water Bottles

At Fast Growing Trees Nursery, we are very supportive of the "Going Green" movement. If you are unfamiliar, "going green" is the movement where more and more people are becoming conscious of the environment. Replacing fossil fuels in engines with ethanol, recycling, and carpooling are all examples of "going green."

Since we've sponsored many programs that support planting trees in urban areas, we are no stranger to being eco-friendly. We must do our part to preserve our earth for it's own sake, as well as for the well-being of future civilizations.

Since the Olympics in Beijing, a lot of talk has been going on about air quality, and how it can be improved in China. Well, with it's huge leaves, the empress tree can take in harmful CO2 gases at a much faster rate than other shade trees. Could you imagine how much cleaner their air could be if every homeowner planted one of these trees?

Many people try to pitch in, but need a little bit more coaxing. For example, thousands, if not millions, of plastic water bottles are drank every day. However, did you know that as much as 80% of these plastic water bottles are never recycled? That figure was taken directly from the EcoCanteen website, which is a stainless steel water bottle. Eco Canteen doesn't leach harmful chemicals into your drinking water like plastic, but is also 100% reusable.

We can all do our part in the "going green" movement... are you doing yours?

Grow an Organic Berry Orchard in Your Own Backyard!

Everyone loves berries. Blue berries, blackberries, strawberries; healthy, delicious fruit that can be enjoyed fresh or baked into pies and desserts. However, the high prices of store bought fruit, and the much talked about risks of pesticides have made consumers wary of purchasing as many berries (as well as other fruit) as they would like.

The solution is simple!

Growing your very own orchard of organic berries is a fun, easy way to provide your family with great tasting, good-for-them berries whenever they wish!

Planting blueberry bushes or blackberry bushes may require a day’s worth of work, and their maintenance may take up some time as well. However, they will quickly pay for themselves in just one harvest. To plant a berry plant such as a blueberry bush or blackberry plant, simply dig a hole large enough to accommodate the entire root system of the plant. Place the plant, and then backfill the hole with 50% native soil and 50% quality gardening soil or peat moss. Then, basic watering and fertilizing practices take it from there!

There is nothing like the taste of fresh, sun ripened fruit straight from the garden. Select some quality blueberry, raspberry, or blackberry plants today and begin enjoying them as early as next season!

Quick Growing Alternatives to Brittle Austree

Recently, the newly introduced Austree has been gaining much popularity as a fast growing privacy screen tree. However, it has also been garnering quite a bit of press for it’s less than desirable attributes.

Advertised as being capable of growing twenty feet in just one season, the Austree – or Aussie Tree – seems the ultimate in instant gratification. Yet weak, easily broken limbs, the need for near constant water and perfect fertilization, high susceptibility to pests and disease, and short life span are being reported more and more. Aussie trees have not been around long, and therefore not much can be said for how they do long term, other than that several customers have reported complete death of Austrees in less than five years.

Instead, opt for a tried and true privacy screen, such as the Thuja Green Giant, Leyland Cypress, or Willow Hybrid. You can expect 3-5 feet of growth per year from Thuja or Leyland, and between 6-10 feet of growth from the Willow Hybrid. While that may be a far cry from 20 feet in one season, it’s well worth the investment of time to plant a privacy screen of beautiful, long lived trees that will survive and thrive.

“Fruit Trees Provide Sustainable Source of Organic Food”

Fruit trees are popular throughout the country for both landscape and practical reasons. In the past few years, demand for high quality organic fruit has increased dramatically as society has become more educated on both nutritional values and “green” issues. The cost of store bought fruit continues to rise, and our knowledge of pesticides and their dangers has made planting fruit trees an obvious investment.

If you plan to grow a fruit tree specifically for fruit production, be sure to select a dwarf fruit trees (rather than large, traditional varieties). These trees max out at a height of 15-20 feet on average, making them easy to harvest. You won’t have to compromise the taste of your favorite fruit to do this, as most popular varieties are available in dwarf varieties. For example, you can purchase Gala, Macintosh, Fuji, Red Delicious, Yellow Delicious, Jonathan, or a Granny Smith apple tree in dwarf varieties!

Whether you plant apple trees, peach trees, plum trees, or cherry trees, you can feel secure in the knowledge that you are providing a safe, organic fruit tree for your family to harvest from!

Beat The Heat With Fast Growing Shade Trees

Looking to save on your electricity bills this summer? Consider landscaping as a means to do it! Planting a fast growing shade tree (or several, for optimal benefits!), according to the US Department of Agriculture, can reduce cooling expenses by as much as 30% and can save 20% – 50% on heating costs. Average annual utility bills run from $1,500 - $2,500, so this could add up to a savings of thousands of dollars in the first few years alone. Plus, healthy, mature trees increase property values by as much as 10%.

It doesn’t take many trees to make a big difference, either! Begin by shading the west and east sides of your home. Trees such as the Autumn Blaze Maple, Royal Empress tree and other red maple trees are fast growers that easily adapt to various soil and climate conditions and will provide an abundant canopy for shading your home.

Because the winter months will soon be upon us, it is also a good idea to begin considering evergreen shrubs and hedges to insulate your foundation, or planting a windbreak. These measures can cut your winter power bills by up to 40%.

Finding Your Perfect Tree Online

<meta equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; The days of long, hot afternoons traipsing through the local nursery and then stocking the car with plants (and getting dirt and water all over the car doing so!) are over with online nurseries, which will simply ship the plants you’ve selected right to your door!

With the click of a mouse, you can search for and find the perfect tree; all without ever leaving the house.

Don’t be taken advantage of, however! Many online nurseries sell trees and plants for very low prices; however these tend to be starter plants: tiny saplings in quart containers that will take ten years to become a six foot tree, if they survive at all. Choose a nursery that carries more mature trees with established root systems. Look for keywords such as “gallon containers” to make sure you are getting a real tree or established plant.

Here at Fast Growing Trees, we pride ourselves in being an online tree nursery that carries only established plant material. With their abundant canopy of brightly colored flowers and unique, peeling bark it is not difficult to see why. These beautiful flowering trees have been around since the 1700’s and are in fact native to parts of Asia. Traditional varieties include the Arapaho & Muskogee, which are still two of the best-selling Crape Myrtles in the country.

The introduction of the Dynamite Crape Myrtle by Dr. Carl Whitcomb in 1997 introduced a whole new idea of how Crape Myrtles should be; bright, vibrant flowering trees with extended bloom periods, adaptability to various soil & growing conditions, and cold hardiness. Within the year to follow, Dr. Whitcomb made several more exciting introductions into the Crape Myrtle family: the Red Rocket, Tightwad Red, & Sired Red, and more. These varieties have quickly become some of the most popular and widely planted in the nation, even as far north as zone 6.

The majority of Crape Myrtles – both traditional and newly introduced – have extended bloom periods that make them all the more desirable. While many flowering trees bloom for 4-6 weeks, most Crape Myrtles bloom for three months, with improved varieties blooming for up to four. You can purchase Crape Myrtles in a wide variety of colors, including many different shades of red, pink, purple & white.

<span style="font-size: 10pt; The Chinese venerables regarded these lovely fruit trees as bestowers of longevity on anyone who ate the fruit.

Its fuzzy, smooth texture also earned a place in Chinese and later English slang. A young bride is a ‘peach’, a beautiful young girl is ‘simply peachy’, the weather is ‘absolutely peachy’ and so on.

At the Fast Growing Trees Nursery we have two ‘totally peachy’ varieties of the peach tree- the Elberta Peach and the Red Haven Peach. You can check out the growing zone that you fall in to see the peach best suited for your garden.

When purchasing a peach tree make sure that you get a tree that has already been ‘branched’ or pruned back in order to give out more branches. Doing so will ensure that your peach tree that will not only produce more fruit but also give you healthier branches.

Visit the Fast Growing Trees Nursery online for well-cultivated peach trees and other fruit trees. Yes, that’s right. This is one of the main reasons why environmentalists simply love these beautiful trees.

Not only does the paulownia suck in heavy amounts of carbon from the surrounding air, but it also puts back equally huge amounts of vital oxygen back in the atmosphere. Paulownias also happen to be one of the few shade trees preferred by urban landscapers who plant these trees along roads and heavily trafficked pathways.

Even if paulownia trees are cut down to create furniture or carvings, the carbon is not released back into the atmosphere, so you can sell or use your paulownia wood for any of these lucrative ventures without any guilt.

So get started and plant a Paulownia Tree today and do your bit for Mother Earth. But they do exist and they are here to stay if the average consumer is made more aware about their existence.

Artificial logs are made out of nature-friendly material like nuts, wood fiber, shells, plant-based waxes, recycled paper, coffee grounds and just about anything that is organic or can be re-used. They can also be used along with tree branches and leaves that litter your garden. But use these sparingly or else you just as might burn a normal log for the amount of smoke you will create!

These artificial logs are said to burn longer than regular timber and manufacturers are producing them according to processes that meet pollution regulations. The fire is more pleasant-smelling then the normal wood which is used to fuel the house.

Artificial logs can be good thing for the environment as well as for your garden. Think of the amount of pollution you’ll be helping prevent and also the good uses you can put your garden waste to…

Just incase you have a big tree you need to uproot for any reason whatsoever you can always sell the timber to a paper mill rather than burn it up in your fire-place.

Save more trees, plant more trees.

Visit the Fast Growing Trees Nursery to get started with your organic and earth-friendly garden today.

Caring For Your White Flowering Dogwood:

There can be nothing more elegant than a White Flowering Dogwood. These slender plants can be grown as small trees or as large flowering plants depending on their variety.

At the Fast Growing Trees Nursery we have lovely Crepe Myrtle varieties that come in differing shapes and sizes. The Caroline Beauty Crepe Myrtles or the Tonto Crepe Myrtles are excellent varieties that can be planted along driveways or in specific areas in the garden.

Our customer favorite, the Dynamite™ Crape Myrtle is one of the most vivid plants you can grow. Most summer and spring plants do not bloom in such a vivid red color, rendering the Dynamite™ Crape Myrtle a unique garden plant.

The Crepe or Crape Myrtle gets its name from the texture of the flowers which are crinkly to the touch. When mature, most Crepe Myrtles are known to reach a height of 30 ft. and a width of up to 20 ft.

While Crepe Myrtles are intrinsic to East Asia and Australia, most varieties are partial to growing zones 6-11 in the United States. They are dug from the field and shipped sans any soil or dirt covering the roots. Some of the bare-root trees available at the Fast Growing Trees Nursery include apple trees, dogwoods, willows, cherry trees and raspberry bushes.

The great thing about such plants is the gel-like residue called Terrasorb that coats their roots. It helps retain the inherent moisture of the plant making it more suitable to ship long distance.

Once a bare-root plant is delivered to your doorstep, you need to ensure that it is planted ASAP. If, for any reason this is not possible, then simply store the plant in a cool area. The main idea is to keep the roots moist.

You can also use the ‘heal-in’ method where coating the roots with a covering of soil does the trick. Take care to keep the stem devoid of any soil. Such an extensive length-span makes this state the third largest state in the U.S.

Growing trees in the state of California has to be a well-planned affair as the highest point on the U.S. [Mount Whitney] and the second lowest and hottest place in the western hemisphere [Death Valley] are hardly 200 miles apart! This highlights the environmental diversity that exists in this region.

Geographically, the topography too is varied, ranging from the rocky Pacific beaches to the snow-topped mountains in the east. Incidentally, central California happens to be one of the largest and most productive agricultural zones in the world; but the southeastern region is home to arid, dry deserts.

Such diverse environmental conditions warrant trees that are hardy, easily adaptable and fast growing. Indeed, the tree is so much a part of the Tuscan way of life that cypress trees are very commonly known as ‘Tuscan Cypress’.

Contrary to popular belief, the cypress is a native of the area surrounding Persia and Syria. The Etruscan traders carried the tree into the Mediterranean area thousands of years ago and popularized the mystical and supernatural stories surrounding the cypress. A history steeped in rich lore and legend makes the cypress an enchanting addition to any garden.

The ancient Egyptian coffin-makers were the earliest users of the cypress as the wood resists rot. The fragrance of cypress was held to ward of demons and aid in the smooth passage of the soul to the nether world.

The Europeans continued this tradition later using cypress leaves to make funeral wreaths. The Greeks revered the cypress and carved out statues of their gods from cypress wood.

The cypress is generally planted on vast stretches of land. Their tall, stately forms add grace and class to any landscape or garden and fill the air with a warm, lingering fragrance. The essential oil that is extracted from the cypress is very fragrant. The resin and needles too find use in potpourris, incense and other air fresheners.

The Italian Cypress at the Fast Growing Trees Nursery can grow 2-3 ft. per year. When they reach the desired height, all you need to do is cut off the top. They are naturally slender and symmetrical and don’t require pruning.

Visit the Fast Growing Trees Nursery for elegant Italian Cypresses which we can ship to you anywhere in the U.S. Own a piece of legend today.

The Glorious Lavender Rhododendron:

The genus rhododendron is a beautiful flowering plant that comes in sizes that range from bushes to huge trees. There are more than 900 species and 8,000 varieties of rhododendrons existing in the world. The various sizes that they come in make them a delight for gardeners to grow.

The great thing about rhododendron plants is the minimal attention that they warrant in terms of plant care. Of course, like most plants rhododendrons are prone to pests like vine weevils and beetles and attacks of mildew. But these occurrences are not very damaging and can be taken care of with fungicides and biological solutions.

The Lavender Rhododendron available at the Fast Growing Trees Nursery is a great shrub that you can use for landscaping your garden. The flowers burst in a profusion of purple during spring and for this reason it has been voted as ‘One of America’s most beautiful plants’ by the National Arbor Day Foundation.

The Lavender Rhododendron has a wide girth and its dense, glossy foliage makes it an ideal plant for hedgerows and borders. But the humble Granny Smith has got more punch than other apples. Though Maria Smith [the namesake for the apple variety] never got to enjoy the honor of having the apples sold under her name, she is remembered by most Americans whenever they ask for a Granny Smith apple.

In 1891, the Granny Smith apple bagged the prize for cooking apples in the Castle Hill Agricultural and Horticultural Show. Since then, Granny Smith apples are the choice apples for many an American dish, especially the famous ‘Apple Pie’.

A lot of grannies, chefs and cooks prefer this variety of apple for cooking purposes as the flesh takes longer to brown out than other apple varieties. The flesh has a sour taste and the skin is firm and crisp, but the flavor that a Granny Smith apple imparts to a dish adds to its versatile nature.

At the Fast Growing Trees Nursery, we include Granny Smith Apple Trees among our apple tree varieties. These trees have been pruned back to result in more branches which are known to yield more fruit that can be picked after the first season or after the first year. Our pruning methods also result in a healthier tree with strong limbs.

Drop by at the Fast Growing Trees Nursery online to know more about the Granny Smith and other apple varieties. You can purchase a tree online and we’ll ship it you wherever you are in the United States.

Visit us at www.fast-growing-trees.com to view our selection today and get started on that delicious apple pie as soon as you get your first fruit.
